i O'— 294 A collection of Roman Catholic Religious Medals, seve- ral of which relate to Canada. The collection is less in extent but quite as noteworthy as the one which brought in the Lewis Sale $83.16. It contains the one with the figure of St. Benedict, with the inscrip- tion against sorcery ; this is explained in Anthon’s Catalogue, No. 2314. A more perfect description, with translation, etc., will be found in Kohler Munz- belustigungen, or Historical Numismatic Amusements, VI, 105. Two of the medals represent St. Benedict standing with a shield-shaped tablet before him, bear- ing the same strange inscription ; one of these is very old and both are very rare. The medals are various in form: round, elliptical, oval, irregular, etc., and they vary in size from 12 to 29. A variety in metals, and the condition runs from fine to proof. A scarce and most desirable lot. 23 pieces.

A BOSTON COLLECTION.

This Collection is the result of an effort, continued through several years, to obtain even- piece relating directly or indirectly to the City of Boston, or bearing the name of Boston, whether having any reference thereto or not. No particular attempt has been made to collect the varieties of the regular coinage of 1652, and 1787-88. Such a collection it was intended to make at a more convenient opportunity, but that opportunity never presented itself ; hence the meagre display in that most interesting depart- ment. The arrangement of the personal medals may be briefly explained by saying, that any piece whatever, relating to Franklin, Webster, or any man prominently identified with the City of Boston, is entitled to a place, whilst other personal medals are excluded, unless some direct reference to the city gives them a right to appear. The medals of the neighboring cities are grouped with those of Boston. Those relating to other parts of New England will be found by themselves further on. It is perhaps not out of place to mention that these pieces were gathered with the intention

A BOSTON COLLECTION.

21

of making- them the basis of a work which should comprise full descrip- tions, with so much of their history as is known, of all the coins and medals of Hew England. Such a work, by a writer well known for his former efforts in the same direction, I may say, is now in preparation, and will doubtless be laid before numismatists in due time.

COINS FROM BOSTON MINTS.

New England Shilling; obv., N. E. ; rev., XII. One of the Wyatt counterfeits in silver. These celebrated counterfeits were probably made in New York City. They were offered for sale some 25 years ago by one Thomas Wyatt, who announced that they were found in Chelsea, in a bottle mostly filled with a bituminous substance resembling tar. The alleged find comprised full sets of the Pine Tree money, including the Pen- ny, together with N. E. Sixpence and Shilling and Good Samaritan shilling. The dies were destroyed many years ago, and all these pieces are now rare.

N. E. Shilling. This piece has been long in my posses- sion. It is not of the Wyatt stamp, being several sizes less in diameter, and of size 16, while that is of size ltty I have always considered this piece a fabri- cation, but am by no means certain that it is not gen- uine ; very fine.

N. E. Sixpence. Wyatt’s counterfeit; very fine, rare.

N. E. Sixpence. Obv. and rev. like the preceding. This is a counterfeit more recent than the Wyatt’s, and is plainly stamped “copy” under the VI; silver, good, edge thin and nicked.

1650 Pine-tree Shilling. A pine-tree with four branches on a side, and two other rudimentary branches at the top, enclosed in a circle of pellets, outside of which is Masathusets In”; rev., within a circle of pellets, 1650 X11; outside of the circle and within another circle of dots, “New England An. Do.”

About 1854 a number of Pine-tree Shillings, all bearing date of 1650, were sold to Dr. Arnmi Brown of this city, by a man named Getchell, of Fisherville, near Concord, N. H. Mr. Getchell stated that he obtained them all from an old man living not far from his place. Three of these pieces were sold by Dr. Brown to Mr. Mickley for $100 each. The fourth is still in the possession of the original purchaser. A number of years after Dr. Brown's purchase, I bought from the same man another of the same date, and similar in design, being a duplicate of the one described in Mickley’s Catalogue, 2249, and illustrated in Bushnell’s Catalogue, Plate 1, Fig. 157. The three originally bought by Dr. Brown

were sold by me in the Mickley Sale, Nos. 2247, 2248, 2249, for $155. They were subsequently sold in the Bushnell Sale, and brought $135.

It is a recorded fact (see History of Lynn, pp. 121-139) that dies for the Pine-tree Shillings were made by Joseph Jenks of that place, in 1650 and 1652. This particular piece came from the collection of Dr. Wm. Pres- cott, of Concord, 1ST. II., who died at an advanced age within a few years, and it was bought by me at the sale of his collection. Dr. Prescott lived in the neighborhood of the first vendor ; he was at that time a celebrated collector and an old man, and it is my belief that he obtained these pieces together, and parted with them in the manner stated, and that they are all genuine issues of the period to which the workmanship unmistakably pertains.

The Boscawen man did not obtain for the whole of them an amount sufficient to pay for the cost of a single die. For the last one which he ever sold, I paid him a sum not exceeding, I think, five dqllars. At the time, there was nothing in the coin market offering a temptation to fraud, and if any fraud was perpetrated, the compensation received was most inadequate.

3 -> 6 348 1652 Pine-tree Shilling. Tall tree with numerous

branches ; fine.

/ 3o 349 1652 Pine-tree Shilling. Thick planchet, somewhat

clipped ; silver, looks like a cast. I think it is a genuine piece that has lain in salt water for a time.

3io 350 1642 Pine-tree Shilling. Tree with five branches on

each side. All the letters in the legend are of small size.

;ioo351 1652 Pine-tree Shilling. Resembles the last, but the

branplies are much longer; obv. fair, rev. considerably worn.

3 o352 1652 Pine-tree Shilling. Small tree, legend has large

. letters ; a cast in tin.

(<|?0353 1652 Oak-tree Shilling. Tree of regular form, shrub at

each side. This shilling is illustrated by Crosby on his first Plate ; it is mentioned as of extreme rarity. I regret, that not having his book at hand, I am un- * able to refer to his description. When his work was

issued, he had never seen even a fair specimen. He subsequently procured one which was pierced. This is nearly fine, though a weak impression. Not more than four are known, of which this is undoubted^ the best. See Plate.

f >o 354 1652 Oak-tree Shilling. Found in a little cave with a number of others at Boothba}q Me., where it had lain long under salt water, the action of which reduced its weight nearly one-half. Piece broken from the edge.

Another Badge of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, en- graved on a large flat gold watch-key. One side has the distinguishing letters of the society, Avith hand and six stars above; rev., within an ornamental border, J. Foster Jenkins, S. P., December 5, 1776.” The length of this key is inches, the weight 108 grains, the gold value a little more than $4.00. I believe that this memento is of Yale College rather than Harvard. See Plate.

Medal of the “I. E. <A” Society, 1783; rev., Greek monogram, below engraved, C. M. W. ; silver, rhomboidal, longest size, 25.

The Society which struck this curious medal, has, 1 believe, never been certainly located. There was once a famous club at Harvard called

the Med. Fac.,” which amused itself by conferring degrees, M. D. et M. U. D.,”' being the favorite and most distinguished, Lord Timothy Dexter and the Czar of Russia, who acknowledged the honor by a liberal donation, being among the recipients. I venture the query whether the Mu Phi on this medal alludes to the Med. Phac. (!) the latter letter beinp’ the nearest approach to F in Greek, and its use, in this case, in accord- ance with the characteristic humor of the Society7.

535 Medal of the Harvard Porcellian Club, inst. 1791; rev., two right hands clasped, Dum vivimus viva- mus above two Greek abbreviations ; silver, heart- shaped, perfect and rare. 19.

This cross has on its branches at the top and sides the name of the Commandery, and on the lower comer K. t. xxiii. ; and although there is a Commandery bearing this name in Boston, this may be a New York body.

The rev. is without inscription save the name of the regiment and the letter G. It bears numerous Masonic and military emblems ; silver, proof, with loop and ring. This medal is very rare, particularly in silver, in which but few were struck. Mr. Marvin says six or possibly ten in this form, which is unengraved. 27. See Plate.

543 Like the last, with the original bar, ribbon and clasp, the latter bearing a tiger’s head, the emblem of the Boston Light Infantry, by which the 43d Mass, was recruited ; tin, proof, very rare , 27 ; with ring and clasp, 53. hvVwY.

LIARD TIMES TOKENS OF 1837.

It is particularly fitting that these tokens should form part of a New England Collection, as, so far as I am aware, they were all made in New England States, the most of them by a gentleman still living in Water- bury, Conn. The numbers in parenthesis refer to an excellent descriptive list, which, may be found in the Coin Collector’s Magazine. All in copper unless otherwise mentioned.

COINS OF THE UNITED STATES.

Feeling little interest in a series of coins varying only in a figure in the date, apart from the commercial interest which every dealer has. I have never attempted to perfect for my own collection the American Mint Series ; hut I several years ago began to gather a series, designed to

56

COINS OF THE UNITED STATES.

illustrate' all the marked varieties of coins ever issued by the U. S. Mint. Ignoring all considerations of rarity, and giving no attention to merely accidental differences in dies, my plan was to obtain only representative specimens, the first and last issue of every marked variety. Such a collection as is here outlined would comprise not far from two hundred pieces in gold, silver and copper. Such a collection I began and well nigh completed, but some time ago the exigencies of my business a special demand for those particular coins within the scope of my collec- tion— led me to part with my accumulations, the absence of which I now regret, and in the place of which I can only offer the meagre list following.

appeared in the Bushnell Sale. They seem to prove what is generally believed, that the 1791 Washington Cents are of English origin. That two dies existed for the large eagle cent of this date, I never until now suspected. The two pieces in the Colburn Collection were obtained from the widow of Hancock, the English die-sinker; the other is from a little collection recently sold in New York, and has hitherto been unknown to collectors. Each one of the three is of extreme rarity and believed to be unique.

MEDICAL MEDALS.

MEDICAL MEDALS.

It will be noticed that the scope of this Collection is somewhat more extensive than is usual with collectors of medals in this department. Whatever relates to' medicine, however remotely, finds place here. Medals of practitioners, of men eminent for knowledge of medicine or collateral branches ; all that concern the sale or use of medicines ; all relating to hospitals and charitable institutions, the causes of death, disease, famine or natural convulsions ; the doctor who prescribes, the apothecary who pre- pares the medicine, and the undertaker who finally covers up the work, whatever bears the emblems of mortality, all may be found here.

Some time since, in conversation with a prominent collector in this department, in response to an inquiry as to the extent and direction of his collection, he said, “I have not yet got to preserving the cards of apothecaries.” When my friend reads this note, and observes that the collection is largely made up of apothecaries1 cards, I trust he will change his method, and by giving particular attention to this interesting specialty, make some reparation to the cataloguer, whose life has been chiefly spent in the occupation 'referred to.
