PREFACE

BEFORE the earl)' part of the seventeenth century St John's College possessed hardly anj' manuscripts. The earliest Register of the College, containing inventories of its furniture and books, notices in the Chapel a certain number of manuscript service-books (which hardly come into account here) but in the Library, so far as I can see, onlj' two volumes which are likely to have been manuscripts, viz. :

de gestis Barlaam et losaphat in pergameno. cuiusdam compilatio de gestis Christ! in pergameno.

Three other books described as " in pergameno" were probably printed volumes, namely,

Novum Testanientum grece el latinc. Erasmus in Novum Testamentum. Officia Ciceronis.

The three Hebrew manuscripts given by Richard Home in 1546 (nos. 1-3 in the Catalogue) are apparently the patriarchs of the manuscript collection as it now exists.

The original home of the College Librar}- was on the first floor, south of the gate of entrance to the First Court. Quite early in the seventeenth century, projects for a new and larger Library building were being discussed; as early, probably, as 1615. But it was not until 1624 that the munificent benefaction (at first anonymous) of John Williams, then Bishop of Lincoln and Lord Keeper, enabled the College to undertake the erection of the present splendid building in the Third Court. The furnishing of the new Library and the transfer of the books seem to have been completed in 1628.

It was apparently seven years later, in 1635, that the College actually received, in one gift, the principal portion of its manuscript collection. I say " actually received " because there is evidence to show that for some twenty years the gift had been promised. There are letters from William Crashaw' (the Puritan divine, father of Richard Crashaw the poet) which point to this conclusion. They were printed by Mr R. F. Scott, now Master, in the College magazine — the Eagle — in December 1901. Crashaw writing to Dr Gw}'nn, Master, on Mar. 23, 16I-J, says that he hopes to visit

Cambridge and to further "that good motion his lordship made to me for our Hbrarye....For the present business you shall be furnished from me

with 3000 volumes and with some 500 manuscript volumes (whereof

I wonder you have none in jour librarye) some very ancient, some very rare, and many never printed." In May 161 5 he says "This noble Earl persists in his honourable intendment towards our librarye... and you are like shortly to receive a faire parcell of bookes, some ancient manuscripts and others printed." On June 30, 1615,"! have delivered alreadye into Southampton house almost 200 volumes of Manuscripts in Greeke, Lattine, Englishe and frenche, and about 2000 printed books, whereof you have not one in your librarye." And lastl)-, three years later, on June 11, 1618 he writes " I was with my Lord of Southampton, who willed me to learne how you proceeded with your librarye, for that he desired first to sende you the books he formerl)- promised, and after to do more as he findes your occasions and his owne intendments and abilitye to corresponde."

The Earl of Southampton who figures in these letters is the famous Henry Wriothesley, the friend and patron of Shakespeare (b. 1573, d. 1624), who had been admitted to the College in 1585 when a boy of twelve years old. It is a fair inference from the letters that he purchased a considerable portion of William Crashaw's library : probably it was owing to the lack of proper accommodation for the books in the College that transmission of them was delajed. In xA.ugust 1626 his widow the Countess of Southampton writes to Dr Gwynn (Mayor in C. A. S. Comm. II, p. 60) in the following terms with regard to her late husband : " having found that in his life Tyme, out of his own noble Inclination he had designed certain books unto the new Library of your House, W-'' have been all this tyme _carefully by me preserved, entire, I hope, in number (for the Catalogue is with you and not with me) and safe from harme. Now soe soone as notice could be taken that the place grew to a readines to receive them,- I have herewithall sent them unto you as a testimony of the good will and affection borne unto your House from hence."

The letter of thanks from the College follows (I.e., p. 61).

Nine years later, in April of 1635, we find the College writing again to the Countess and also to the Earl of Southampton (Mayor's Baker, -pp. 510, II) to thank them for a further gift of books. And it would seem that the books now given were manuscripts. The letter to the Earl, Avhich is in Latin, has the words " ita scilicet manu.scriptum hie apud nos invenimus, ita Praesentem te intuemur in Monumento puta non tarn anti- quorum Patrum quam immortalis tui gloriae nuper admodum a nobis excepto." To the Countess they say : " Having received yourc most noble gift of Manuscripts which are already imprinted in our hearts wee desire now to testifie our due thankfulnessc in this short manuscript'." ' This letter, not printed in full by Mayor, has been kindly copied for me by the Master.

It seems, then, that the course of events was this : Earl Henry purchased both manuscripts and printed books from William Crashaw, about the year 1615. Pending the erection of the new Library, they remained at Southampton House until 1626, when the Countess sent to the College the printed books. The manuscripts for some unknown reason were held over until 1635, and then sent as a joint gift from the Countess and Earl Thomas (b. 1607, d. 1667). It is this Earl whose signature Tho. C(omes) S(outhampton) appears in nearly all the volumes and is noted in this Catalogue (as it is in Cowie's) in the form T. C. S. The father's signature Hen. C. S. is found in but one group of volumes, and those late and uninteresting (nos. 385-8). But it was Earl Henry who originated the idea of the gift and is really the great benefactor of the Library.

It is evident — though we hear little or nothing of it from other sources — that Crashaw's collection of books enjoyed a certain celebrity at Cambridge. Mr Bradshaw {Collected Papers, p. 251) says: "From an entry I lately noted in reading through the University accounts for 1614-15, when Dr Samuel Ward was Vice-Chancellor, it seems probable that the Crashaw Collection had some chance of being purchased for the University Librarj'. The entry is as follows :

Certainly, so far as manuscripts are concerned, it deserved to be widely known and eagerly competed for. The 160 manuscripts which came from it to the College include a very large proportion of the best in the library. Over 150 out of some 270 medieval manuscripts are due to this one source.

The same decade was fruitful in other gifts of manuscripts. Doubtless the erection of a new library proved a .stimulus ; at any rate we see that in the years 1631-39 valuable accessions came from Edward Bcnlowes, Hilkiah Croke, Jeremiah Holt, William Beale and Sir Thomas Bendish, and that no subsequent period has a record to be compared with this.

Passing over the names of numerous donors of small groups of volumes, we come to that of the second great enricher of the College library, Thomas Baker (d. 1740), a man who has man}- other claims to the gratitude of those of his House. Over seventy MSS. were bequeathed by him. A good number of these came to him from Sir Thomas WagstafiV-

There is a catalogue of Wagstaffe's MSS. in the O.xford Catai^^i Maituscriptorttin Angliae (1697: II i, 85), in which 48 volumes are enumerated : about a dozen of these (none of them, apparently, of much interest) seem not to have come into Baker's hands.

In 1762 eighteen volumes were given by W. Grove, formerly Fellow. M. Paul Meyer in his most interesting tract on some of the French MSS.

in this library {Ro7Hania VIII, 305 sqq.) has traced the history of these in some paragraphs which I will quote in cxtenso.

" Enfin, en 1762, un ancien fellow de Saint-John's, W. Grove, enrichit la bibliotheque du college de huit ouvrages ou recueils, formant 18 volumes, qui, a cause de leur origine, meritent de retenir un instant notre attention. Ce sont les MSS. cotes T I a 18. L'un d'entre eux, T 14, porte les armes de I'eveque de Lodeve Plantavit de la Pause, I'auteur d'un ouvrage erudit sur les eveques qui I'avaient precede sur le meme siege ; le meme ^IS. et d'autres encore (T 8, 15-18) portent Vex libris de Charles de Pradel, eveque de Montpellier; tons enfin ont fait partie de la riche bibliotheque d'un autre eveque de Montpellier, Colbert de Croissi. A la mort de Jean de Plantavit de la Pause (1648), sa bibliotheque fut achetee par son successeur, Ferudit Francois Bosquet. Devenu eveque de Montpellier (1655), celui-ci transporta dans sa nouvelle residence sa precieuse collection de livres imprimes et manuscrits, qui, a sa mort (1676), passa a son neveu- et successeur Charles de Pradel. Colbert de Croissi, qui succeda (1696) a Charles de Pradel, acheta la bibliotheque de son predecesseur et I'accrut par de nouvelles acquisitions. II la legua par testament avec tous ses biens a I'Hopital general de Montpellier, qui, ne sachant qu'en faire, en fit dresser le catalogue et la mit en vente, en 1740, deux ans apres la mort du prelat. Un libraire de Toulouse, nomme Caseneuve, en fit I'acquisition, et sans doute la revendit en detail. C'est de lui, directement ou par inter- mediaire, que W. Grove dut acquerir les dix-huit volumes maintenant conserves a Saint-John's. Ces dix-huit volumes, que je vais enumerer selon leur ordre de classement a Saint-John's, sont ainsi decrits dans le catalogue de 1740:

Ces MSS. ne sont pas les seuls de la collection de Colbert de Croissi qui aient trouve place sur les rayons d'une bibliothcque anglaise. La perle de cette collection, le volume unique contenant les livres X, XI et XII de la correspondance d'Innocent III, confie par I'eveque Bosquet a Baluze qui le publia, est mentionne dans le catalogue de 1740 (II, 439) et fait actuellement partie de la bibliothcque de M. le comte d'Ashburnham {Appendix no. 98)'."

The last benefaction to this department of the Library which calls for special notice is the gift, made in 1902 by Lord Peckover of Wisbech, of one of the gems of the famou.s Fountaine Collection, a Book of Hours which was once the property of the Foundress of the College, the " mother of the King," Lady Margaret, Countess of Richmond and Derby.

A word as to former catalogues of the collection. One was prepared in 1675, probably for insertion into the Oxford Catalogi of 1697, but, for what reason I know not, never got into print. There are several manuscript copies of it, e.g. Trinity College O. 5. 38, no. 10-.

No printed catalogue appeared until the Rev. B. Morgan Cowie, some- time Fellow, and later Dean of Exeter (d. 1900), compiled one which was published in quarto in 1843 by the Cambridge Antiquarian Society. It is in two parts, the first containing descriptions of classes A to H, the second those of classes I to T. The titles of the treatises are largely taken from an old MS. Catalogue in the library. Mr Cowie deals little in description of externals, and gives no estimates of date, but on the other hand supplies a great deal of miscellaneous information as to authors and editions of treatises.

The provision of a catalogue on more modern lines seemed desirable ; and I long ago received the kind permission of the Society to compile one. In the course of the work — which was largely done in 1904 — I received much kind help from the then Librarian, Dr J. B. MuUinger, as well as from the sub-librarian, Mr Lockhart, and more recentl}', while I have been revising and completing my descriptions, the present Librarian, Mr J. H. A. Hart, and the staff have earned my cordial thanks for the way in which they have met my frequent demands on them. The Master has also been most kind in assisting my inquiries into the history of the collection.

In its scope and plan the present volume differs in one respect from

other catalogues which I have made. I have adopted the plan of separating the more modern manuscripts from those of the medieval period, and have devoted less space to the description of them'. The medieval books, however, I have treated on the same scale as in my other catalogues, attempting to supply such details with regard to their external aspect, structure, decoration, and contents as will put students into a position to judge of the importance of each. Lists of donors, owners, provenances, and approximate dates have been added, and also a review — somewhat fuller than usual — of the volumes remarkable for their decora- tion. This last does duty for an index of subjects represented in the miniatures. The general Index is the work of Mr A. Rogers of the University Library.

I have spent many pleasant hours over the manuscripts of St John's College. The publication of this description of them adds the last con- siderable member to the series of College catalogues which I began" in 1895. In the earlier volumes there is, I know, a great deal to correct and to supply : may the defects of the present one prove to be fewer !

Evidently written or adapted for the use of a Western scholar, very likely a Franciscan, for this order was addicted to the study of Hebrew. The Latin titles of the books are written as headlines in red and blue capitals, and the chapter-numbers in red and blue Roman numerals. There are also pencil notes in Latin of cent, xiii-xiv showing the corre- spondence of the lections in the Pentateuch with the prophetical and other lections at the end. A later writer has copied these, and seems to have misunderstood them. At Exod. xxv the name Kyngston is pencilled on the lower margin. This is no doubt the John Kingston who owned no. 2.

At the end of Proverbs is a note which Dr I. Abrahams has kindly translated for me :

1. I pointed (and revised) this book for my brother R. Levi on Friday of the

Pericope Test' (July-August) of the year 20 of the sixth thousand (5020). May God make him worthy to study it, that it may not depart from his mouth and from the mouth of his seed henceforth and for ever.

2. I, Samuel Ha-naqdan (the Punctuator).

This is followed by a short Hebrew rhyme. The date is thus July-August A.n. 1260.

I gather from Dr Abrahams that the punctuation is rather more likely to have been done in France than in England at the above date.

On f 96 is a note: Naaman Aaron f Mosis says y' this manuscript is 450 years old. Jul. 30-95 [probably 1695, judging from the writing].

The Librarian, Mr J. H. Hart, has kindly furnished me with some notes to the following effect :

The script is a French hand.

The date is fixed by a note on f. 98 (z (96) which reads : " I completed this book on the day before the new year at the end of the year of the fifth thousand "=1238.

On 99 « at the foot is a note acknowledging the sale to R. Nathaniel ben R. Jacob of the Commentary on the Prophets and Hagiographa : the sale is of the owner's free will, without compulsion, and is made absolutely : the buyer is empowered to re-sell the book or dispose of it by gift in any way he pleases. The signature to this note is cut by the binder : it is probably Samuel b. Isaac.

The manuscript contains many of the lo^nsi'in or French glosses which are character- istic of Rashi, but are often omitted in the MSS.

The ornamentation of the book is exceedingly fine. The principal divisions have miniatures and borders, and the smaller initials, often in dragon-forms, are prolonged with bars of gold and colour ending with solidly painted pink and blue foliage. The drawing of the pictures is good but not extremely delicate.

A remarkable decorative initial on f. 2. In this part of the book I think we have a different illuminator, and one of great spirit. The initials of the five divisions have the same subjects as those in vols, i and 2, except Lib. 11 (36), which has initial of St Katharine with wheel and sword standing on Maxentius. The lower border is cut off.

There is a long declamation at the end : the last words are :

After this a leaf is cut out. Then follows one with more documents, in charter hand, relating to St Dogmael's.

The ornamentation of the book is very fine. Fach statute has an admirable initial usually of thick pink and blue foliage on gold ground. Besides this there is a highly ornamented page, at the beginning of the Statutes of each reign. Thus :

Robert Steward was the last prior and first dean of El\'. He was very fond of emblazoning his arms in his books. See especially the Liber Eliensis at Gonville and Caius College.

Two flyleaves at the beginning are from a commentary on the Sentences, two at the end from a treatise on Civil Law (xiii): two others at the end are part of a leaf of a large and handsome antiphoner, with music on five-line stave.

On f iv^ is a full-page drawing of the Crucifixion, with the Virgin and St John, of rough execution ;ind in pale colours. The cross is green, the title is on it, Christ is crowned witii tliorus. The robes of the figures are mostly pale purple.

The book contains a number of good miniatures : good in colour but rather hasty in execution. M. Meyer has given a list of those in the first part of the book and has transcribed the directions to the artist which have survived in the margin opposite to a large number of them. I here give a somewhat fuller description.

The following account of the book is given by Mr G. C. Macaulay in his great edition ot Gower's Works II, p. cxxxix (among MSS. of the First Recension, revised) :

J. St. John's Coll., C.\mb. B 12. Contains the same as A. Parchment, ft. 214, 12x9^ in., in quires of 8 with catchwords : double column of 39 lines, written in a verj' neat hand of the first quarter of fifteenth century. Latin summaries usually omitted, but most of them inserted up to f 5 (Prol. 606), and a few here and there in the fifth and seventh books.

The first page has a complete border, but there are no other decorations except red and blue capitals. Old wooden binding.

The seventh leal of quire 12 (v. 57-213) and the first of quire 14 (v. 1615-1770) are cut out and a passage of 184 lines is omitted in the first book (i. 631-814) without loss of leaf, which shows that the manuscript from which it was copied, and which here must have lost a leaf, had the normal number of 46 lines to the column.

Various names, as Thomas Browne, Nicolas Helifax, J. BajTiorde, are written in the book, and also 'John Nicholas oweth this book,' with the date 1576. .\x the beginning -we find 'Tho. C. S.', which stands for 'Thomas Comes Southampton.' The book was in fact bought with others by Thomas Wriothesley, Earl ot Southampton, from William Crashaw, Fellow of St. John's College, and presented by him to the College Library in the year 1635.

This MS. gives a text which is nearer to the type of F than that of any other first recension copy. In the later books especially it seems often to stand alone of its class in agreement with F, as v. 649, 11 12, 1339, 1578, 3340, 4351, 4643, 5242, 6059, 6461, 6771, vi. 162, 442, 784, 973, 2089, vii. 445, 1027, 1666, 2424, 3235, 4336, 5348, viii. 13, 239, 747, 845, 1076, 1415, 1456 ff., 2195, 2220, 2228, 2442, 2670 ff., and it is noteworthy that this is the only first recension copy which supplies the accidental omission of ' eorum disciplina —materia' in the author's Latin account of the Conf. Amantis at the end. As regards individual correctness it is rather unequal. In some places it has many mistakes, as vi. 1 509 flf., while in others it is very correct. The spelling is in most points like that of F, and it is usually good as regards terminations ; but the scribe has some peculiarities of his own, which he introduces more or less freely, as 'ho' for 'who,' 'heo' for 'sche'- (pretty regularly), ' heor ' for 'her,' 'whech' for 'which.' It must also be an individual fancy which leads him regularly to substitute 'som tyme' for ' whilom ' wherever it occurs. Punctuation usually agrees with that of F.

On Z. two men of smaller pro- portions, and young, hold by a fixed bar and tread on bellows whose nozzles are placed in a wide-mouthed pipe communicating with an organ which has two rows of pipes and seven spatulate keys. Above, in the comer, a man seated with a hammer in L. hand plays seven bells hung on a bar ; with the fingers of his H. hand he plays an instrument lying on his knees — a box with a short projecting key at each end.

Round his neck hangs by a cord a barrel-shaped drum : he beats the ends with his hands. On R. 4 people (3 men and a woman) apparently only looking on. On L. two tumblers stand on their heads. Behind them one man plays a fiddle, a second blows a horn. This has been taken to represent either a dance of masquers — the principal figure being arrayed in a beast's skin, — or else the devil and his choir — profane, as opposed to sacred music.

Upper half. In C. Christ on tree-like cross (with wavy arms, knots, etc.). He has a cruciform nimbus which the limbs of the cross intersect. His loin-cloth reaches to the knees. He is attached to the cross by four nails. His head is inclined to Z. On L. a small man in peaked cap stands on a small double mound and pierces Christ's side. f. I a. Full-page picture in two halves. Outline, heightened in places with red. It is enclosed in a frame of leaf-ornament uf the classical type, veined with red.

Upper half. In C. David, bearded, on a chair decorated with heads of beasts : his feet on a footstool. He wears crown and tunic with broad border and socks or buskins,

and plays a harp supported by a kneeling attendant. On J^. one man holds an instrument (mouth organ ?) to his mouth, a second has a book inscribed Beatus | qui non | habiit | in co«|silio I \//ipioru//i \, a third blows a curved horn. On L. two men of smaller pro- portions, and young, hold by a fixed bar and tread on bellows whose nozzles are placed in a wide-mouthed pipe communicating with an organ which has two rows of pipes and seven spatulate keys. Above, in the corner, a man seated with a hammer in Z. hand plays seven bells hung on a bar ; with the fingers of his R. hand he plays an instrument lying on his knees — a box with a short projecting key at each end.

Lower halj. In C. a hairy demon-like figure full face, his head buried in his shoulders : beast-like features, ears, and tail. Round his neck hangs by a cord a barrel-shaped drum : he beats the ends with his hands. On R. 4 people (3 men and a woman) apparently only looking on. On L. two tumblers stand on their heads. Behind them one man plays a fiddle, a second blows a horn. This has been taken to represent either a dance of masquers — the principal figure being arrayed in a beast's skin, — or else the devil and his choir — profane, as opposed to sacred music.

f. 31 a. Full-page picture without frame, in two parts. Careful but unskilful drawing in outline.

Upper half. In C. Christ on tree-like cross (with wavy arms, knots, etc.). He has a cruciform nimbus which the limbs of the cross intersect. His loin-cloth reaches to the knees. He is attached to the cross by four nails. His head is inclined to L. On L. a small man in peaked cap stands on a small double mound and pierces Christ's side. On L. of him the Virgin nimbed holds her robe to her eye.

The Rev. F. E. Warren considers that " the execution of the drawings... and the forms and colouring of the initial letters, and the prayers for ' regem nostrum' and ' domnum archiepiscopum ' on f. 2\2a indicate an English scribe and artist. It is an English copy of a French original " and " probably belonged to and was written in one of the English cells of the French Abbey of S. Remigius at Rheims." This might be Laplej' in Staffordshire. The lands held by the Abbey in Northants, Stafford and Shropshire are indicated in Dugdale, Monast. vi (vii) 1099.

I do not agree with Mr Warren in thinking the style of the drawings, etc., English, but on the liturgical point I defer to his authority.

The text continues without break : Cumque claudius suscepisset neronique iniperatori legisset, and narrates the vision of Christ seen by Nero, and the destruction of Jerusalem. This conclusion, which I believe has never been printed in full, is being investigated by Professor von Dobschiitz for the new- edition of the Acta Pilati. It ends f lob:

I do not feel certain to what source this interesting and beautiful book should be assigned : but the presence of the feasts of S. Oswald (abp) and Egwin in the kalendar suggest a connexion with Worcester. From this point of view, however, it is noteworthy that S. Wulstan's name is an addition.
