PREFACE.
In the present Volume are printed the Registers of seven Devonshire parishes, and the Editor hopes that now a series \ for Devonshire has been commenced all the Parish Registers
^ of the County may be included in it.
^^ In the neighbouring counties much progress has been
V made in this direction in the last few years, and we may
-^ anticipate equal interest will be taken in the work of pre-
\\ serving — through the means of the Press — the ancient Parish
Registers of this County. In Cornwall upwards of 85, and
in Somerset 79 Marriage Registers have been printed, while
in the Dorset series, much more recently commenced, 36
Registers have already been rendered available by publication,
and it is hoped that not less rapid progress will be effected
in Devonshire. 13791 G4
The contents of the present Volume show how needful it is that steps should be taken to print our Parish Registers and place them beyond risk of destruction. Of the seven parishes included, only that of Uffculme possesses a Register going back to the earliest period of 1538 ; five do not com- mence until the seventeenth century and one not till 1752. It will thus be seen how great has been the amount of parish records that have perished, ; but placed thus in print as in this volume the contents of Registers are safe from loss or destruction.
The Editor desires to tender thanks to the Rev. R. D. Cooke, Rev. G. W. F. Fagan, Rev. F. Thomas, Rev. T. Taylor, Rev. W. Oldham and the Rev. T. W. Howard for their valuable help in transcribing the Registers.
It has not been thought needful to print the entries verbatim. They are reduced to a common form, and the following contractions have been freely used :
w. = widower or widow. p.=of the parish of.
s.=spinster or single woman. co.=in the county of.
b.=bachelor or single man. dio.=in the diocese of.
d.= daughter. /jc.=marriage licence.
The reader must bear in mind that these transcripts are not legal " evidence," and that for certificates the clergy in charge of the Registers must be applied to.
The Editor again desires to impress upon the reader the fact that it is only volunteer assistance that renders the issue of these Registers possible. He will gladly welcome further help in the work of transcription in any part of the County.

Note. — The oldest Register contains the Baptisms from 1558 to 1641 and the Marriages from 1612 to 1653. The entries are all on paper and the edges of the pages are much frayed. The book has been carefully rebound and the weak pages mounted. The Register of Baptisms is fairly complete, but the Marriage portion of the book is very defective. The Marriage entries are on two pages at the end of the book and consist of the years 1612-1619 and 1639-1653. There were three additional pages of Marriage entries but they have been almost entirely torn away and only a word or two is now left.
The second volume commencing with 1671 contains Baptisms, Marriages, Burials and Briefs. The paper of this volume is also of a very poor quality, the edges of the pages are much frayed and there are entries between 167 1 and 1689 at the bottom of the pages that have been completely torn away. There is a blank space in the book for the Marriage entries for a part of the year 1708 and for the years 1709-17 12.

Marriages at Kings Kerswell,
1752 to 1837.
Note. — There is a short account of the parish registers on one of the leaves of the oldest now extant. The handwriting is that of Rev. Aaron Neck, who served the parish first as Curate, and then as Perpetual Curate from 1812 to 1852. It seems from this that the oldest register (now unhappily lost) commenced September 20th, 1702, and ended March, 1752. It contained the register of Bap- tisms, Burials and Marriages, but there was a deficiency of the register of Marriages from 1702 to 1712, and from May, 1738, to May, 1745,
The next book, which is not of parchment, commences March, 1752, and ends '1812. It contains a complete register of Baptisms and Burials for that period, and of Marriages to March, 1763, but the Marriages seem to be more fully entered in the next volume. It is stated on the fly leaf of this one that it was bought in 1752. Rev. Henry Sleep, Curate, Henry Rendell and Richard Yabsley, church- wardens.
The next register of Marriages, 1754 to 1792, is on parchment and being in a bad state of repair was restored at the e.xpense of the present Vicar in 1892 by E. Cox and Son, of Chancery Lane. They have inserted a note that the register from ist December, 1774, to 4th August, 1782, were wanting at the date of restoration. This volume commences with entries of Banns, which, in some cases, help to decipher those of marriage which follow.
The third volume is not of parchment, and also commences with entries of Banns. It was bought in 1786. The Rev. Thomas Fearer, Vicar, Daniel Codner and William Ash, wardens. This contains Marriages from 1786 to 1812.
The next volume contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837, and has entries for 300, but only 133 have been used.
These extracts have been made by the Rev. G. H. F. Fagan, Vicar of Kings Kerswell, and are now printed by his leave and under his supervision.

1654 to 1812.
Note. — The earliest register of this parish is a small neatly bound Volume, of which the first page had evidently become much stained and worn before the present binding was added. The first entry records the publication in 1654, Commonwealth fashion, of Banns between William Morice, Esq., afterwards created a Baronet by Charles II., and Gertrude, daughter of Sir John Bampfylde, Bart- Unless this a copy of some previously existing record, the entry must have been made subsequent to 1660, for it was not until the Restora- tion that William Morice, the father, was made a Knight. From 1654 until 1682 there is only one entry and this is illegible.
At the head of the first page occurs the following declaration signed by Sir William Morice, Knt., Secretary of State for Charles II. : — " Nov. 14, 1653. Thomas Pearce was approved and sworne the Parish Register in Werrington. Will. Morice."

Marriages at Countisbury,
1676 to 1757.
Note. — The Registers before 1813 for Baptisms and Burials, and 1837 for Marriages, are bound together in one volume. This volume contains seven distinct registers of varying sizes, some on parch- ment and some on paper. These seven registers are thus bound up :
Part I consists of 40 parchment pages, gins, by 6|ins. ; Bap- tisms and Burials from 1676 to 1757 ; and Marriages 1676 to 17S4.
Part II consists of 12 parchment pages, 14 ins. by 10 ins.. Baptisms only, 1757 to 1812. In it are two notices on the same page and in the same writing as follows : — (a) " Thus far was the register copied in the year of our Lord 1787." (b) " Thus far was the register copied in the year of our Lord 1788."
Part III consists of " A Register Book for Marriages .... conformable to an Act of the 26th of King George II, &c., &c." The register contains on 14 paper pages, 14 ins. by 9 ins. (the last one and a half being unused) Weddings from 1755 to 1810, with a note after the last entry : — " N.B. There was not any marriage at Countesbury from Novr. 17th. 1810, until 1813."
Part IV consists of 6 paper pages, 14 ins. by 9 ins., with a printed cover "The Register of Banns of Marriage published in Countesbury Church," and contains these from 1755 to 1800.
Part V consists of 6 parchment pages, 14 ins. by 10 ins.. Burials, 1757 to 1812.
Part VI consists of 12 paper pages and a printed cover, 8 ins. by 6| ins., and contains the Banns of Marriage, 1823 to 1852.
Part VII consists of 12 pages of printed forms. Marriages, 1813 to 1840, the last three of which, dated 1837, 1838 and 1840, are also entered in the new registers.
The ink in the earlier portion of the first of these seven sections is considerably faded, but the writing throughout is good and quite decipherable, and on the whole the registers appear to have been carefully kept. Some leaves are loose, but none apparently missing. There are also two old parchment bound books of church accounts going back to 1678.
These Marriage registers have been extracted by the Rev. R. W. Oldham, Rector of Martinhoe, with the permission of the Rev. C. E. Treadwell, Vicar of Countisbury-cum-Lynmouth.

Note. — Volume I. of parchment, contains Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, and a few Briefs ; the ink is very faded ; the first few pages are evi- dently missing, and much of the last few pages is illegible, but this does not affect the Marriages which are in the middle of the book. The Marriages date from 1633 to :729.
Volume II. A parchment bound book, written on parchment, good preservation, contains Baptisms, Marriages and Burials. The Marriages date from 1729 to 1753.
Volume III. A paper book of Marriages & Banns from 1754 to 1812.

Note.— The Parish Registers containing Marriages are nine in number ; another one is missing.
Vol. I contains 81 parchment leaves, usually 12^ by 8 inches, and is bound in vellum. Baptisms, Burials and Marriages. These last date from 26 Jany., 1538, to 12 Oct., 1618. The book is well preserved except the last two leaves.
Vol. II. — 136 parchment leaves, 12 inches by 8, bound in vellum, Baptisms, Burials, Marriages. These last i May, 1619, to 2 Feb., 1679. The book is in good condition.
Vol. III. — 31^ leaves of parchment, and has had i6i cut out from the end ; it is bound in brown leather ; Christenings, Burials and Marriages. These last from 7 June, 1680, to 14 Oct., 1689.
Vol. IV. — Paper leaves, tender in places ; very mixed entries of Burials, Baptisms or Births, and Marriages. These last are from II May, 1695, to 27 Dec, 1718.
Vol. V. — 27 parchment leaves, bound in vellum, Marriages, i8 May, 1719, to 5 Nov., 1742, besides Christenings and Burials. The book is clearly written and in good condition.
Vol. VI. — 90 leaves of parchment and 2 of stiff paper added ; 7 pages are used for notes on weather, prices and crops. Bound in brown leather, 17 inches by 7. Marriages, 5 Nov., 1742, to 14th March, 1753.
