The route of most of them is by way of Nashville and Memphis. As the Chicago season does not open as early as usual this year, many who would otherwise go direct to Lakeside will take in the Tennessee meetings. Newport will get its full share of horses, book- makers and other material. Ed Austin has done strong missionary work in its interests. Starter Fitzgerald will leave Wednesday night for London, Ont., wh^re his family has spent the winter, and will arrive in New York a few days before the season opens on April 25 at Aqueduct. Judge Clarence McDowell goes at once to Washington. Colonel R. W. Simmons will remain here until the opening of Morris Park. Secretary Clark will remain here to superintend the rearranging of the track and the erection of new buildings, which work will commence at once when the present meeting comes to an end. A letter from Memphis to the St. Louis Re- public says: “Bob Tucker in person will take Isabey and a 2-year-old filly. Gay Parisienne, by Tournament out of Princess Iskra, to Nashville. Charley Patterson will send May Hempstead and a 2-year-old colt by Fonso. There is much interest manifested in the meeting of Gay Paris- ienne and May Hempstead. They both worked the track at Montgomery Park yesterday morn- ing, and Tucker’s filly negotiated the distance in .515. May Hempstead’s time was 525, but she was not let down except for the last furlong. When these two were yearlings at Lexington last fall a match between them was about to be arranged, as the opinion of trainers inr Ken- tucky was divided as toVhich was the speedier of the two. Their meeting in Nashville will therefore be of more than ordinary interest to all who have watched the work of the pair.” The formidable stable of J. W. Schorr & Son, now at Memphis, is composed of the following horses : Sligo II, br, h, 6, by Hanover— Kittie L. Meadowthorpe, b. c, 4, by Kantaka— Baby. Macy, br. c, 4, by Hindoo— Alga. Young Harry Wise, son of a formerly very prominent politician, was ruled off by the Cali- fornia Jockey Club last week for being “in” with the ringingof Mary Nance under the name of Los Rosas at the Oakland track. How a young man of high standing in business and society and a prospective millionaire could de- scend to such nefarious courses is the current puzzle in ’Frisco. A1 Goodwin, the Texan owner and trainer of Mary Nance, was also ruled off. All the horses belonging to the firm of Res- pass & Sharpe will be sold at public auction on the opening day of the Newport meeting. The sale was ordered by the Kenton County Circuit Court, and is for the purpose of settling up the estate of the late Sol Sharpe. The horses that will be offered are Goose Liver, Elusive, Cov- ington Ky, Fred Broens, Esther R, Thorpe and four two-yeai-olds. Declarations from the Oakley stakes are due April 1. Declarations from the Derby are $30, Oaks $20, Buckeye Stakes $20, The Diamond, Emerald, Sapphire Stakes and Moerlein Handi- cap $10, and if the money don’t come along the declaration don’t go. The Derby will be worth in the neighborhood of $10,000 this year. The License Committee of the American Turf Congress has refused to grant licenses to Jockeys Morse and W H. Blake for various reasons. Morse is well known to race goers and Blake is a well known Canadian rider. Ex-jockeys Garner and Slaughter have dis- solved partnership as horse owners and Garner will resume riding, probably for his former em- ployer, G. C. Bennett. Sutton has been barred from running at Ingle- side. The contrast between his winning form and his “sulking” form was too pronounced to suit the judges. The difficulty between Jockey C. Combs and his employers, Tomlinson & Co., has been smoothed over and the boy will rejoin the stable at Memphis. Backwater from the swollen Ohio river now covers the Newport race track several inches deep. The stables are as yet high and dry, how- ever. The Turf Congress license committee has con- cluded to give Jockey Bloss a chance and has given him a license to ride at Little Rock. Jockey Joe Piggott has engaged to ride for H. L. Frank for the remainder of the year. Algol has been well backed to win the Metro- politan Handicap at Morris Park. Louis H. Ezell has purchased the steeplechase horse Reno. The fast horse Damocles is reported to have become a roarer. INGLESIDE FORM CHART. INGLESI.HE, CAL., March 31. — Seventieth day. Pacific Coast Jockey Club. Winter Meeting. Weather clear ; track fast.
