i

PREFACE.

The volume presented this year to the Surtees Society contains " The heraldic visitation of the county of York," made by Sir William Dugdale, then Norroy King of Arms, in the years 1665 and 1666. This valuable genealogical record is now for the first time printed entire from a copy in the handwriting of the late Dr. Raine, collated by the editor with Dug- dale's original copy which has been for many years the property of Miss Currer of Eshton Hall, who has most kindly and liberally allowed the Society the use of it for this purpose.

Miss Currer' s " noble " MS., as it has been justly designated by a high authority,* was stated in the proposals issued by a late accomplished genealogist -f- for publishing " Dugdale' s Heraldic Visitation of Yorkshire with additions," to be the " only perfect copy out of the Heralds' College." It forms a large folio volume, consisting of nearly 300 leaves of paper, and containing the pedigrees of 472 families, a pen-

and-ink drawing in trick of the armorial bearings of each family being placed at the head of the pedigree.

A small part of the contents of the volume is believed to be in the handwriting of Sir William Dugdale himself, but the greater number of the pedi- grees, and of the shields of arms which are executed with much artistic spirit and elegance, are undoubtedly the work of Gregory King, afterwards Lancaster Herald, who was in Dugdale' s service and accom- panied him in all his visitations of the Northern counties. Sir William Dugdale appears to have retained possession of the MS. until he was created Garter King of Arms in April 1677. A few days after his promotion he presented the volume to Sir Henry St. George, his successor in the office of Norroy, who was at a later period advanced to the rank of Garter, and died in the year 1715. It was probably upon his death that the MS. passed into the possession of Robert Dale, who at that time was Blanch Lyon Pursuivant and Deputy Registrar of the College of Arms, and, it is said, had accompanied Sir Henry St. George when Clarencieux in some of his visitations.

A few months before his death, which happened in April 1722, Robert Dale was created Richmond Herald, and a son of his appears to have been the next possessor of the MS. The Dales sprang from a Yorkshire family of the agricultural class settled at Great Smeaton, a parish on the banks of the Tees, a few miles distant from Darlington, and this fact may perhaps diminish our surprise upon finding that during

PREFACE. IX

the latter part of the last century the volume had passed into the hands of a person in humble circum- stances residing at Darlington, by whom it was offered for sale to the late George Allan, Esquire, the well known antiquary. Mr. Allan declined purchasing the MS., but took the opportunity of making a copy of it for his own use, and of this copy, which is now in the Library of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, he subsequently permitted several transcripts to be taken, one of which was made by the late Rev. James Raine, D.C.L., whose loss the Surtees Society has so much reason to deplore.

In the year 1797 the MS. was bought by the late Sir Mark Masterman Sykes, Baronet, of a Mr. W. Prince of York ; and in the year 1824, when Sir M. M. Sykes' s collections were dispersed by public auction, it was added to the treasures of Miss Currer's splendid library.

In transcribing and collating the present volume for the press, the Editor has been anxious that it should contain a faithful reproduction of Dugdale's MS. The peculiarities of the orthography, and espe- cially the irregularities in the spelling of the names of persons and places, are scrupulously retained. A few errors of fact which have crept into some of the pedigrees are so obvious and unimportant that it seemed unnecessary to attempt any correction of them.

To those members of the Surtees Society who are acquainted with the localities it may not be unin-

teresting to trace the route taken by the illustrious herald in his Visitation of the great county of York nearly two centuries ago. On the 1st of August, 1665, Sir William Dugdale commenced his sittings at Doncaster, and during the former half of the month he held courts at Barnsley, Pontefract, Leeds, Knares- borough, and Skipton. Eroni Skipton he crossed the mountainous country which divides the West and North Ridings, and on the 18th of August he arrived at Richmond, where he was occupied three or four days. Thence he passed to Thirsk, Stokesley, and Malton. Leaving Malton on the 30th of August he entered upon his Visitation of the East Riding at a small market town in the heart of the wolds called Kilham, where his court was attended by the heads of nearly twenty families then nourishing in the sur- rounding district, a few of which are still among the most distinguished of the gentry of that part of York- shire— the Boyntons, the Grimstones, the Legards, the Osbaldestons.

Besides Kilham, the only East Riding towns visited by Dugdale in this journey were Hull and Pockling- ton. On the 9th of September he commenced his sittings at York,* and remained there several days, his courts being attended by the gentry of the city and the immediate neighbourhood, and by many from more distant parts of the county. On the 14th of September he again sat at Doncaster, and from thence

PREFACE. XI

paid a second visit to Barnsley. On the 16th of Sep- tember he sat at Rotherham, where he concluded the Visitation of this year.

In the spring of the following year Sir William Dugdale resumed his Visitation of Yorkshire. On the 14th of March, 1665-6, he set out from his own house, Blythe Hall in Warwickshire, and proceeded straight to York, where, on the 19th, he commenced his sittings, and was occupied several days in record- ing the genealogies of nearly forty families whose representatives attended his summonses from all parts of the county. From York he went to Ripon, where it does not appear that he transacted any business, and thence to Skipton. The pedigrees of the two families of Currer of Skipton and Currer of Kildwick seem to be the only results of his sitting at Skipton on this occasion. Whilst he was in this district he passed a few days with his friend and brother-anti- quary Charles Fairfax esquire at his house at Men- ston near Otley ; and on the 1st of April he was at Halifax, a town he had not previously visited. Thence he went to Leeds, Wakefield, Pontefract, Doncaster, and Sheffield. From Sheffield he returned home.

In the month of August Dugdale entered upon his Visitation of the counties of Durham and North- umberland; and on his way through Yorkshire he sat a few days at York. In September he returned into Yorkshire. On the 8th he was at Stokeslcy, and on the 10th at Malton. Thence he crossed the East

Xll PREFACE.

Riding wolds to Beverley, resting a night at the " Golden Gryphon," at Kilham. After he left Be- verley a few pedigrees appear to have been taken at Hull and Malton, but it may be inferred that Norroy himself went from Beverley to visit Lord Fairfax at Nun-Appleton,* where he arrived on the 17th of September. On the 21st he was again at his own residence in Warwickshire.

When Sir William Dugdale undertook his Heraldic Visitation of the Northern Counties he had passed the sixtieth year of his age. Yet all his journeys and he must have traversed many a wild moor and rugged valley were performed on horseback. His only companions were his two clerks, one of whom was Gregory King, then a youth of seventeen or eighteen years, but already remarkable for his skill in the transcribing of pedigrees, and the tricking and depicting of armorial bearings. -}-

It is evident that in the earlier years of the Restora- tion the pride of family was not universally prevalent in the county of York. Nearly one-third of the whole number of gentry whom the herald called upon to appear before him with proofs of their arms and pedigrees treated his summonses with neglect. The following precept, which was not issued by Dugdale until two years after he had concluded his Visitation

* He notes in his Diary that at this time he " borrowed of my Lord Fairfax 18 manuscript bookes which were Mr. Dodsworth's, whereof 15 are in folio and 3 in 4to." Hamper's Life, p. 124.

To the High Sheriff of the County of York.

Whereas the King's most excellent Majesty, being desireous that the Nobility of this his Realm should be preserved in each degree as well in hon1' as in worship, and that every person and persons, bodies politic and corporate, and others, should be known in their states and mys- teries without confusion and disorder, hath authorised me, William Dugdale, Esqre, Norroy King of Armes of the North East and West parts of this his Realm of England, not only to visit all the said

province, and to peruse, take knowledge and of all manner of

Arms, Cognizances, Crests, and other like devices, with the notes of the Descents, Pedigrees, and Marriages of all the Gentry therein contained, but also to reprove, control, and make infamous by Proclamation all such as unlawfully and without just authority, vocation, or due calling do, or have done, or shall usurp or take upon him or them any name or title of honour or dignity, as Esquire, Gentleman, or other, forbidding also and straitly comanding all his Shireves, Commissioners, Arch- deacons, Officials, Scriveners, Clerks, Writers, or other whatsoever they be, to call, name, or write in any Assize, Sessions Court, or other open place or places, or to use in any writing the addition of Esquire or Gentleman to any person or persons within this my province above- mentioned, unless they be able to stand unto and justify the same by Law of Arms of this his Realm, or else be ascertained thereof by adver- tizement in writing from me the said Norroy King of Arms, my Deputy or Deputies, Attorney or Attornies, in that behalf, as by his said Majesties Commision, under the Great Seale of England, more fully doth appear.

Know ye therefore that I, the said Norroy, in pursuance and accom- plishment of his said Majesties desire, and furtherance of his service herein, having in my last visit within this County of York, by due summons, required the persons whose names are hereunto annext, to shew unto me by what right they do use and bear any such Arms,

Cognizances, and Crests as above and take upon them those

titles and dignities of Esqrc or Gentleman, and having received no suf- ficient proof of such their right thereunto, and my own justification

In this list may be recognised a few of the well- known antient gentry of the county, besides many heads of families whose descendants at this day would have rejoiced had they then placed their pedigrees upon record. But the majority of the names were probably then of little note, and are now wholly lost sight of.

Some light is thrown upon the circumstances which caused this inattention on the part of the gentry of Yorkshire, by the following passage of a letter addressed to Sir William Dugdale by his friend Charles Fairfax, in the month of June 1666 : " I received your letter, wherein I have (so far as I could) observed your com- mands. Some gentlemen will attend you at the next assizes to whom I gave notice ; but many (not sensible of the honour of their families) I find remiss, yet hope (upon their better thought) they will do right to pos- terity and give their attendance. Your too short stay in your several circuits (and their coincident appear- ances upon summonses before the Deputy Lieutenants) they alledge for excuse they could not wait on you." *

We must necessarily lament the absence of the pedigrees of so many families from that which was destined to be the last of the heraldic visitations of

the great county of York ; yet without them it con- tains a rich mine of genealogical and heraldic evi- dence, from whence all future labourers in those vast fields of Yorkshire history and topography which have been hitherto unexplored and uncultivated cannot fail to derive information and assistance of the highest value and importance.

The Council of the Surtees Society were desirous of appending to the present volume Sir William Dag- dale's Visitation of the County Palatine of Durham. The only copy, however, of this record that they could obtain has been found to be so inaccurate and incom- plete that they have resolved not to lay it before the Members of the Society.
