PREFACE.
The utility of Vocabularies has always beeij acknowledged ; to expatiate therefore, on their general benefit to ltudents> would, perhaps, be deemed unimportant : yet it may be necelTary to make a few obfervations concerning the prefent undertaking.
Tvlany perfons have been much abridged in their Oriental refearches from the want of a fuitable vo- cabulary to alTill thgm in their lludies ; and al- though Ibme gentlemen have procured Mr. Rlchard- fon's elaborate Didionary of the Arabic and Perfian Languages, yet many have been deterred therefrom by the price which it bears. To obviate which, -and to render their purfuits more rapid and pleafant, the following Vocabulary, containing the mod ufual words, was compiled. It is therefore hoped, that the cnfuing lliects will be found of confidera* ble fcrvice to thofe w^ho arc not at prefent provided with diclionaries, or who have not an opportunity of confulting them. The principal w^orks that have been referred to in forming this Vocabulary are, Mcninfki's Thefaurus, ?Jr. Richard-foil's Die-

tionary, Golius's Lexicon, the vocabularies annexed to Sir W. Jones's and other Grammars, Mr. Glad- win's Vocabulary, the I'arhang Jehangeery, Monf. D'Herbelot's Bibliothequc Orient ale, the Kalhfi Loghat, the Loghat Reihedy, Kirkpatrick's Voca- bulary, and others. A\'hen luch learned Oriental re- politories appear as the ground work of the prelent Vocabulary, it may be ncedlels to advance any thing further. But it may be neceirary to mention a few particulars relative to the manner of ufjng it. In all Oriental eompofitions there arc a variety of particles prefixed or annexed to words, a\ hich it is ablolutely rcquifitc to fcparatc or anulyfe before the meaning of an expreihon can be clearly mad<^ out, and the Perfians and Arabians, like the He- brcwsj arc by no means exempt trom this peculiarity.
The prhicipal particles which are prefixed to nouns, &c. are thofe which follow :
j) al, the Arabic article ///e ; as, /Vi'a'1 al koraun the Koraun : fee col. 2G. This Arabic article is feldom written feparately, but generally joined to the noun, as in the inllancejutt quoted.
; (or . bee, prefixed to verbs beginning with \^) is the charaderillic lign of the firft future tenfe, QF of the imperative mood, and is fometimes ufcd in the preterperfed tenfe ; as, >U bee-auyeed, the

J (for ^) is the prepofition placed before nouns, &c. fee col. 36. as, -♦jr. \i\\zm\ to a womaiiy fee col. 47. This letter; is likewife, but not often, pre- fixed by way of pleonafm to fome words, in which cafe it is entirely impolTible for any tranflation to give its precife meaning ; as, ^^ buburid lie took or lore up, fee col. 39.

It may be proper to mention, that fince the Arabic is much interwoven with the Perfianhmonage, a multitude ofwords properly belonging to that tongue muft neeeflaril J appear in this Vocabulary ; in which cafe, it has fometimes been deemed necellary, tince the Arabs have a variety of plural forms, greatly dif- ferent from the fimplicity of tlic Perfian, to give the plural as \s-ell as the fmgular ; thus, j<^ chungaut taJoJis, is the plural of ^tr> chungul a talon, fee cols. 83, 81, and 458 ; et multis ali'is locis.
If the perfian iludent pay attention to the rules here laid down, it is hoped he will find great allift- anee from tlie ufe of this Vocabulary, which is fo contrived, that there can be little doubt of his improve- ment in that moft necellary and elegant language.
